This petition requests that KMHA and Alliance Hockey recognize the importance of adding a Kitchener Single “A” team for the 2005 age group in the upcoming 2016/2017 season.
Background of 2014/2015 for the 05 AAA, A/AA, MD RED/BLUE, HL SELECT
Kitchener AAA – Kitchener finished first in regular season and won championship
Kitchener A/AA – finished 3rd in seeded and constellation regular season, won constellation playoffs and semifinalists in playdowns.
Kitchener MD RED/Blue – Kitchener Red finished first in regular season, Blue won Alliance and Red was finalist
Kitchener HL Selects – Kitchener first in regular season and finalist in Alliance Championship
All above mentioned teams have won or been finalists in the majority of the tournaments entered, some of which were against teams seeded at higher levels.
Current for 2015/2016
Kitchener AAA 1st place 89 goals for 32 against in 24 games played
Kitchener A/AA 2nd place 70 goals for 18 against in 14 games played
Kitchener MD Red 1st place 69 goals for 12 against in 14 games played
Kitchener MD Blue 3rd place 72 goals for 15 against (only loss has come against Kitchener red) in
13 games played
House League Select 1st place 12 goals for 3 against in 4 games played
All above mentioned teams have won or been finalists in the majority of the tournaments entered, some of which were against teams seeded at higher levels.

Kitchener AAA = 13 out of 56 teams
Kitchener A/AA = 26 out of 84 teams
Kitchener MD red = 2 out of 124 teams
Kitchener MD blue = 6 out of 124 teams
Note: Of the teams ahead of both Kitchener MD teams - most are B teams - which is the small center equivalent of Single A - very few MD teams that would play in league or tournaments are at the top of the rankings.
The issue
The Kitchener 2005 group is a very talented group of kids and they deserve to have another Level of Hockey added in order to provide opportunity for proper growth and competition level. Other centers struggle to compete with Kitchener teams at the MD and Select levels and yet they have added an “A” team for their 2005 kids this season. Kitchener’s teams are receiving negative feedback from the Alliance and OMHA community for having kids playing at levels that are below their standard of skill. Parents are planning on leaving KMHA to go to other cities so their children will be able to play in a level more suitable to their talents and against teams that provide adequate competition. Every year the 05 group is at capacity for registration and get at least 100 skilled kids at every rep tryout level. Unfortunately there are not enough spots for everyone on these teams and those that don’t make it will eventually quit hockey or leave Kitchener because we do not have enough competitive teams to accommodate them. This will eventually result in other Centers getting stronger and potentially ours getting weaker. Goalie development is suffering due to lack of shots during games and goalie parents are forced to spend extra money on additional programs.Closing remarks:
KHMA states in the rep manual under Philosophy of the program that “K.M.H.A.'s Rep Program was developed to allow for the potential development of a hockey player at the highest level of competition and at the caliber most suited to the individual hockey player's needs, abilities and desires. “ They also state in the Principles of the Program their goal is “To provide an elite level of minor hockey that promotes the importance and understanding of work ethic, good sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork and the fair treatment of others during competition under all circumstances and all conditions.”
When our MD teams are winning games by 10, 12 or 14 – 0, how are they being provided with an opportunity to develop at the highest level of competition? How can we, as an organization claim that we are treating other teams fairly during competition when the other teams barely touch the puck? How are our goalies being developed to their fullest potential when they have only 2-3 shots per game? How is Kitchener Minor Hockey providing our children with an elite level of minor hockey that is most suited to their individual needs and abilities? Adding a Single A Rep team for the '05 group would demonstrate that KMHA truly believes what they proudly state in the Rep manual. Adding a team under extenuating circumstances does not mean that is now the standard, but in this case, with this group and this talent pool, it simply means it is the exception to the rule.
All of our Rep teams and House league teams in Kitchener as well as competitive teams in the Alliance will benefit from the addition of a Single A team in 2016/2017 for the “05” age group. It will give players a chance to compete at a level suited to their talents and allow for Kitchener to become a stronger center overall. It’s not fun for kids to play in games where the scores are lopsided or in a league where the only other competitive team is from the same center. Let’s do the right thing and not risk losing Kitchener’s budding stars to other cities or allow them to quit the great sport of hockey.
