The purpose of this petition is to advise the Ville de Montreal of the current unacceptable situation our community faces day-to-day and give actions to be taken to eliminate the problems. The odors, truck traffic and water contamination in relation to operations at Sanimax has still not reached the acceptable standards of the residents. The people who have signed this petition are requesting the following actions by the Ville de Montreal:
Action 1:
The unloading of the trucks must be done indoors ensuring no odors escape during unloading of the waste material and the transportation of animal by-products must be done in refrigerated and sealed containers.
There are approximately 200 homes within 500 meters and 1000 homes within 1 km of Sanimax. A proper buffer zone typically mandated for companies such as these is at least 500m from any residential areas. The actions requested are due to the fact that Sanimax operates within the normal minimum buffer.
Action 2:
It is requested that Sanimax Montreal complete facility improvement to eliminate odor pollution (air and water) within an agreed defined timeline.
Action 3:
It is requested to instate a set of fines when Sanimax does not conform to community standards and the submission of 10 complaints in a 24 hour period. The money will be used to pay for infrastructure damage caused by truck traffic.
Action 4:
In July of 2010 the Ville de Montreal-Est introduced a ban of activities associated with the handling of waste material. They have since modified this to allow a new development of an organic waste processing facility about 3km south of Sanimax in exchange for infrastructure improvements. There are many concerns about the noise, odors and increase of traffic associated with this site. It is requested this ban be reinstated and the new development put on hold until Sanimax has reduced their yearly complaint average by more than 85% to show that these waste processing facilities can be responsibly handled within city limits.
