Close Hemp Roots

A new store, Hemp Roots, has moved into the strip mall across from Colonel Irvine Junior High School over the summer of 2012. The large storefront windows do nothing to hide the posters and paraphernalia that glorify smoking of all types. Pictures of hemp leaves and walls filled with bongs and pipes are what you can see through the large windows. This type of business has no place in a residential neighbourhood like Highwood. Their location on Northmount Drive is directly across from the Junior High. Our children stand in front of their store to eat their lunch, and go to the convenience store. It is within 1-2 blocks of 2 elementary schools, our community centre and play school. It is within walking distance from at least 10 different schools. We would like the Hemp Roots store on Northmount Drive to move to another location. Not only is it not appropriate for a school zoned area, but the transient crowd it brings into the neighbourhood is also undesirable. We do our best as parents and community members to teach our children the right goals and paths in life. Places like this that make smoking look "cool" or "fun" are not welcome to set up shop in our community. They do have a right place in a large city, but it is not within an area zoned for schools and neighbourhoods.
